Back at the house there were games of Omaha Hi-Lo at a portable poker table, the first half of St Kilda v West Coast on the large screen TV and tuna pasta and salad, speeches and multiple toasts at a long dining table. In between downpours we played team frisbee on the road then drove to a nearby park for 10 holes of frisbee golf before we were soaked in a rainstorm and abandoned play. I was back in the gang and for the next 24 hours the fun didn’t stop. There were hugs and handshakes, a fresh brew in the teapot, gossip on the balcony and very quickly the years fell away. Stepping inside the house, I could hear football commentary from the TV, voices debating poker rules, a kettle boiling and a guitar and ukulele combining on a maudlin country version of Rock Around The Clock.Īs soon as I was spotted, a ragged bunch of blokes suddenly cheered and launched into a chaotic version of a Blues Brothers song with hand claps and crazy dance steps, shifting into a kind of anthem, with everyone singing random snatches of different football club songs. As I arrived, the rain stopped and the sun broke though clouds massed over the sea and Linda Ronstadt and Zevon wrapped up the final chorus of Excitable Boy.

Feeling excited and a little nervous to be back in this scene with 10 strong personalities who’ve developed a series of running gags and shorthand exchanges, a language built up over the last 25 years. I set off late Saturday morning with essential supplies … firewood, sourdough bread, multiple frisbees, table tennis bats, leaf tea, Robur teapot … and drove through torrential rain and howling winds, listening to Warren Zevon and eating chicken sandwiches.

Plus, a ‘Roast’ was planned for one of the group who’d missed celebrating his 60 th last year and had recently separated from his partner. There’d be stories, laughter, music and continual competitive games (poker, frisbee, table tennis, pool, board games, word games, computer games).

Then I thought about Warren Zevon’s pithy remark and realised a couple of days away on the Mornington Peninsula would be a tonic. But right now, struggling to stay awake on the corner of Chapel and Alma, I was thinking of sending my apologies. While I enthusiastically attended one of the first in a converted church in The Otways, I’d missed all the others and was pleased to be invited. This group of men have had annual getaways since the 90s but this was special, their 25 th. I was reconsidering my weekend trip to Rye with friends.

Driving home, I was hit by a wave of fatigue and a case of FOMOOS (Fear Of Missing Out On Sleep) and stopped for a power nap in a quiet side street. I’d had a busy week on the radio, filling in for David Astle, then doing The Friday Revue. With his characteristic dry wit, Zevon simply said, “Enjoy every sandwich”. We were talking about Zevon’s death and how David Letterman devoted an entire show to him just before he died, asking Zevon what he’d learned about death. Last week, Henry Wagons was playing our ‘ Whattareyounuts?’ game and discussing his tribute show to singer songwriter Warren Zevon.

Sometimes a comment from The Friday Revue really resonates with me.
